Sculpture in Wood - Winner 2008
Sarah lives and works in Sheffield and has exhibited internationally both in solo and group exhibitions. Her work appears in the collections of the Henry Moore Institute, the British Museum and the WHO Collection, Geneva amongst others.
Sarah’s highly original work appears to be playing with modernist ideas alongside a very clear interest in wood as a material. She uses wood and composition woods in her sculpture because ‘it is an ubiquitous material and as such, often overlooked in sculpture in favour of more valuable or fashionable materials’. She shapes it using cnc technology and wood turning methods among others.
The wood sculptures she makes can be thought of as loosely belonging to one of the following categories; stacks, plinths, table sculptures, turned wood sculptures and environments. Unlike other pieces that she fashions herself her table sculptures involve using found tables and modifying them.
