Sculpture supported by the Yoma Sasburg Estate - Shortlisted 2013
2010 saw this Glasgow-based artist exhibiting both at the British Art Show 7 and the Prix Ricard in France. Mick’s work is based on a repertoire of images derived from commercial art and literature. Roland Topor and Stefan Themerson are two such influences that shape Mick’s work through mirroring the absurdity and strangeness inherent in their work and transposing it into his.
His exhibitions can involve creating ‘sets’ which encompass walls, floors and sometimes even ceilings evoking an absurdist world in which the apparent ‘constructedness’ of the work means that things are never quite what they seem. Two residencies in France have enabled Mick to create a permanent public artwork for the Chamarande region and a piece in the public collection of the FRAC Basse-Normandie.
