Composition for Musicals supported by the Lionel Bart Foundation - Shortlisted 2013
Writing songs for bands from an early age and then becoming a professional actor Dougal picked up strong instincts for character and how music affects theatrical drama. The songs in his celebrated musical Departure Lounge (2010) were heavily influenced by the guitar-based music he listened to growing up, suiting the characters whose age and background were similar to his own.
Aware that he needed to expose himself to a more diverse range of music he worked on Britain’s Got Bhangra for Stratford East as lyricist working alongside an Indian composer. Managing to make an Asian audience laugh with one of his comedy lyrics in Punjabi was a proud moment as was the show winning Best New Musical at the Off West End Awards. Recent compositions for The Bacchae and Blood Wedding have encouraged an even wider diversity by exploring the 'techno-world' and the music of Spain.
