Composition for Musicals supported by the Lionel Bart Foundation - Shortlisted 2013
Christella works as a musical director, recording artist and performer in Leeds where she is based and UK-wide. Her first inspiration to work on sound and music for theatre came from a trip to Trinidad while working on the play Carnival Messiah with Geraldine Connor. Her interest in Caribbean culture is ongoing and she cites Ella Andall, a Caribbean singer and composer, as an important mentor.
Her most complete musical to date is Dubwise Lik staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2009 which told the story of a Caribbean immigrant Donovan Ottley and his search for solutions in the face of injustice and prejudice. She has composed music for the play First Cut directed by Gail McIntyre at the Yorkshire Playhouse and Firebird for Phoenix Dance amongst others.
In 2007 she decided to initiate and develop her own vocal performance group “Caution” with the aim of developing the talent of local young singers and providing them with performance opportunities to develop their abilities within the city of Leeds. The group has been thriving for over four years now performing at Space2’s Theatre projects at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, winning local performance awards (Breeze Has Talent ’09: Best Group) and most recently gained the opportunity to perform on stage alongside Choir Master Pete Churchill at the Olympic Torch Evening Celebration Event in Leeds and for her majesty the Queen at her Diamond Jubilee celebration in Leeds city centre.
