The Arts Foundation launches new award with the David Collins Foundation

  • The Arts Foundation have announced that Furniture Design will be the first award made possible by a Foundation set up in 2016 to honour the legacy of late architect and interior designer David Collins.

‘Furniture Design is a fundamental part of how we define the spaces we live and work in. It was an area that David was very passionate about. Inspiration was found far and wide from auctions, to flea markets and exhibitions. We are delighted to embark on the first year of this new relationship’, says Iain Watson, CEO of David Collins Studio, West London.

The Fellowship will be awarded to an emerging talent based in the UK who is chosen from a pool of applicants nominated by experts and judged on the basis of talent, innovation and need. The shortlist will be announced in November.

Director of the Arts Foundation, Shelley Warren adds, 'Furniture Design has been the topic of much debate this year in London highlighting the constantly changing way that it is designed, fabricated, sold and disposed of. With radical changes in the teaching of design and the increasing move towards the ‘multidisciplinary designer’ this award and the designers it will uncover will make for a very interesting award’‘.

By teaming up with the Arts Foundation to administrate the award, The David Collins Foundation will be able to support artists from a range of different disciplines in forthcoming years to celebrate the designers’ love of, and contribution to, the Arts.

    About David Collins Studio
Through an inauspicious job of designing an art collector friends’ house in 1985, David’s first break as an interior designer came when chef Pierre Koffmann enlisted him to design London restaurant La Tante Claire. From this and subsequent early commissions, David and business partner Iain Watson set out to bring a new form of thinking to the design industry gradually employing a multidisciplinary team of experts to cover all elements of interior and architectural practice. Over the course of the next 30 years the David Collins Studio has completed countless interior design projects across hotels, restaurants, residential, hospitality and retail projects worldwide including The Connaught Bar, The Wolseley and Alexander McQueen stores.
