Ed Thomas

Fellow in 1993 for Playwriting

Ed is a playwright, director and producer at Fiction Factory, the film and TV production company he founded more than twenty years ago in Cardiff. His work has been widely distributed to over a 100 countries garnering over 90 nominations and awards including BAFTA, Golden Nymph Monte Carlo and New York Film and TV awards.

Most recently he is the Executive Producer,co-creator and director of the hit detective show HINTERLAND/Y GWYLL (BBC, S4C, ALL3M, NETFLIX ) which is made in both the Welshand English languages. His other credits include FALLEN SONS,SILENT VILLAGE, CHINA, CWMGIEDD/COLOMBIA, SATELLITE CITY, PEN TALAR and MIND TO KILL.

His first play was HOUSE OF AMERICA which won the Time Out award for best new play way back in 1989,which was then made into a feature film opening at the Sundance Festival Utah in 1997.

His plays include FLOWERS OF THE DEAD RED SEA (1991), EAST FROM THE GANTRY (1993) SONG FROM A FORGOTTEN CITY (1996) GAS STATION ANGEL (1998) and STONE CITY BLUE ( 2005). His work has been translated into 10 languages and produced all over the UK, Europe, Australia and North America, most notably at The Royal Court London, Donmar Warehouse, Tramway Glasgow and the Perth and Melbourne Festivals. His most recent play ON BEAR RIDGE is scheduled to open autumn 2019 in a co-production by the Royal Court and National Theatre Wales.

Ed is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and is also a Visiting Professor and Honorary Fellow at the University of Wales Aberystwyth.
