Katrina Lindsay

Fellow in 2005 for Costume Design

Little did Katrina Lindsay know that her childhood obsession for her parents’ copy of The King and I would result in studying Theatre Design at St Martins, combining her interest in live performance and visual art. She says of her work, ‘at the heart of my design work is the passion to create a complete world, where every aspect of that world enhances the emotional core of the story. Central to this is character, expressed by an actor in the space’.

After leaving college she collaborated with Wink, a small project based company headed by Rufus Norris. Tight budget and time limitations gave her, she believes, an early confidence to trust her instincts and responses to making visual theatre, emphasising the emotional stories in a raw and truthful way. Since 2000 her work has included Under the Blue Sky (Upstairs at the Royal Court), Sleeping Beauty (Young Vic), ID (Almeida) and The House of Desires at the Swan Theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company). Her future vision involves blurring the boundaries between the different practitioners’ area of work.
