Melanie Counsell works across a variety of media, materials and processes — including 16mm film, sculpture, drawing, sound and printed matter — and has built a considerable reputation for her economy of means and material refinement. She has produced numerous critically celebrated installations that have expanded the given architectural framework, making works through the intense manipulation of time, scale, architecture, light and object. Based in London Melanie has been exhibiting works nationally and internationally for 30 years.
Exhibitions and commissions include solo projects for Artangel London, Galerie Jennifer Flay Paris, Matts Gallery London, Works|Projects Bristol and the Lightbox Commission for Chapter Gallery, Cardiff. In 2007 Melanie was awarded the Sargant Fellowship at the British School at Rome, and has undertaken residencies at FRAC Corsica 2008 and Cove Park, Scotland 2009. Melanie has works in private collections in the UK, France and Germany and works in public collections including the Fonds National d’art Contemporain and FRAC Pays de la Loire, France.
