Martin André currently divides his time between conducting and his position as the Artistic Director of Teatro Nacional de Saõ Carlos, Lisbon. He studied music at Cambridge University and made his professional debut conducting Aida for Welsh National Opera, with whom he then spent many seasons as a resident conductor. During this time he worked on a wide variety of repertoire, and conducted numerous performances of Falstaff, Jenufa, Ernani, Rigoletto, Madama Butterfly, Un Ballo in maschera, Eugene Onegin, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. From 1993 to 1996 Martin André was Music Director of English Touring Opera, for whom he conducted Le Nozze di Figaro, The Merry Widow, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Cosi fan tutte, La bohème, Orfeo ed Euridice, Werther and Rigoletto, both in London and on tour throughout the UK.
