Jas Kayser

Shortlisted in 2024 for Jazz Composition

Jas Kayser is a drummer, composer and band leader, who was nominated for MOBO Best Jazz Act 2022 and won Jazz FM Breakthrough Act 2021 and Parliamentary Jazz New Comer 2021. She has been studying rhythm ever since she was a teenager and released her Fela Kuti inspired three-track EP Unforced Rhythm of Grace back in 2020, followed by her debut album Jas 5ive in 2022. There she expanded upon West African influences, feeling out rhythmic similarities between Afrobeat and Jazz with technical precision and a unique social/cultural framing.

She has been picked up as an artist by Yamaha Drums and Paiste Cymbals and has won an international following thanks to her eclectic adventures in sound which have taken her to Panama, Boston and the heart of the exciting London scene, where she is now based. In 2018 Jas made a cameo appearance in Lenny Kravitz’s Low music video. She is an alumnus of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and has played alongside her mentors Terri Lyne Carrington, Danilo Perez and Ralph Peterson, as well as Alfa Mist, Jorja Smith, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings and Lenny Kravitz.
